Play by the rules
Jim Bouton and Chip Elitzer of Wahconah Park
Incorporated can make their latest gripe with Pittsfield go
away by simply doing the right thing -- abide by public bidding
laws. It's like baseball, which has a set of rules. If the
pair want to use the city's ballpark, they have to play by
the rules for renovating public buildings. The first time
they failed to put a team in Wahconah Park it was the fault
of the Parks Commission and a variety of nebulous co-conspirators.
This time, the partners are blaming a different Parks Commission,
along with a mayor they imply won't stand up to the carpenters'
union. If the venture has the potential they say it does,
what's the big deal with paying the carpenters union wages?
If this deal falls through, Mr. Bouton and Mr. Elitzer should
drop the blame game and look in the mirror.
