Eagle Editorial: Murphy's spot is secure
Rick Murphy, who is stepping down as general manager of the
New York-Penn League's Tri-City Valley Cats in Troy, N.Y.,
has earned a place in Pittsfield's proud baseball history.
When the Pittsfield Cubs of the Eastern League left the city,
Mr. Murphy and Mike Casey, both Berkshire natives, were the
key players in the move of the Penn League's Little Falls
Mets to Pittsfield in 1989. The franchise remained a success
until owner William Gladstone, needing a new stadium to meet
league requirements, moved it after the 2001 season to Troy,
where it is averaging 3,000 fans a game. Pittsfield, now without
professional baseball, can look back with nostalgia on the
good years with Mr. Murphy and the New York-Penn League.
