July 7, 2004 - Letter to the Editor of
the Berkshire Eagle: An era revisited
I have been a fan of baseball from childhood.
Growing up in Pittsfield
in the post-World War II era, I attended nightly city league
softball games
fielded by the public works, police and fire departments,
among others sponsors.
My father both played and kept score at
these games, such was his love of the
game.
July 4 at Wahconah Park was reminiscent
of that era. The evening was
magical, nostalgic and uncomplicated, a welcome distraction
from the complexity
of life today.
Thanks and congratulations to Jim Bouton
for the evening and the future
of baseball at Wahconah Park. I, as one of the over 4,500
fans, enjoyed the
game immensely. This was a fine representative team of Pittsfield
players. I am
sure that many of us would follow that or any other team
Jim would field at
Wahconah Park for an upcoming baseball season.
